
The second-ranked Saint Mary's Cards needed only two quarters to put eight touchdowns on the score board against the then eighth-ranked Stuart Broncos. The Cards had too much speed and power on their senior roster-heavy ball team.
The Cards on their first series went 45 yards for a touchdown. Two passes from Card quarterback Mike Simons to tight end Dan Haggerty were key in the opening score. The first pass was a 21-yarder which put the Cards on the Bronco 23-yard line. The second pass was a 13-yard TD to Haggerty from Simons. The extra pass to Willis from Simons was good, making the score Cards 8, Broncos 0.
The Broncos needed just two plays to even up the score. On the second play of the series Bronco quarterback Lucas Vogel connected on a swing pass to running back Matt Langan for a 62-yard TD. The extra point was good, making the score Cards 8, Broncos 8.
The Cards responded with a 9-yard drive that ended with a 2-yard TD run by Dan Haggerty. The extra point run from fullback Hickey made the score Cards 16, Broncos 8.
The Broncos went four downs and punted with the Cards starting out on their own 33-yard line. On the first play of the drive, Simons connected on a 46-yard pass to Matt Willis for the TD. The extra point pass to Haggerty was good, bringing the score to Cards24, Broncos 8.
The Broncos running back Matt Langan fumbled the ball on Broncos 15-yard line and Cardinal defensive end, Adam Koenig, recovered on the Stuart 22-yard line. Two runs by Cardinal back Jed Givens put the ball on the Broncos' 3-yard line. Quarterback Mike Simons ran it in for the score. Hickey converted on the extra point resulting in a score of Cards 32, Broncos 8.
The Broncos went four downs and punted to their own 32-yard line. On third down and short yardage, fullback Ryan Hickey went 26 yards for the Cardinal TD. Hickey also ran in the extra point making the score, Cards 40, Broncos 8.
The Broncos made a couple of first downs driving the ball down to the Cards' 16-yard line when a Bronco pass was intercepted by Mike Simons on the Cards' 22-yard line. The Cards marched down the field. A key third down pass from Simons to Haggerty was good for 29 yards to the Bronco 3-yard line. Simons ran in the extra point, resulting in a score of Cards 48, Broncos 8.
The Broncos went three and out and punted to the Cards' 21-yard line. A couple small gains on the ground put the Cards on their own 37-yard line. Quarterback Mike Simons went around the end for a 53-yard TD. Extra point by Hickey was good, leaving the score Cards 56, Broncos 8.
A penalty on the kickoff put the Broncos on their own 8-yard line. The Broncos were able to advance the ball to their own 26-yard line before turning the ball over to the Cards on fourth down.
A first down pass from Simons to Hickey was good for a 26-yard TD. Hickey also make good on the extra point, making the final score Cards 64, Broncos 8. The game ended at half due to the 45 point rule.
The Cards play the Ewing Tigers this Thursday at O'Neill at 7:30 p.m.
