Demaris Stout Birmingham was a 1920 graduate and her memories were collected through her daughter, Barbara, who is a second generation alumnus ('48).
Demaris spoke frequently of Sr. Antonette, who was a favorite. She was very ladylike and an influence to Demaris.
Demaris' only complaint was that she was too tall to sit comfortably in the chairs at school.
St. Mary's students performed numerous plays and a favorite of Demaris' was one in which she played an Indian maiden and Claire Biglin( Sr. Calixta) was the Jesuit priest. What was unique about this play was that the cast wore genuine Indian costumes.
Demaris and her sister Irma loved music and sang together often. Demaris was the soprano voice and Irma was the alto. She and her sister were two of the day students who stayed at the school during the big flu epidemic.
Demaris had to board at Mercy High in Omaha for one year in high school. Even though she had an aunt close in Omaha, she was homesick.
Demaris' love for her school, as with other alumni, shows through the memories that never dim down through the years.
