Memories of St. Mary's

I "went all the way" at St. Mary's, 1st through 12th grade, graduating in the class of 1983 (by far the best class ever produced by this final institution!). The one thing that stands out most in my mind is how my life and the lives of all of our families completely revolved around the school and parish. All our recreational, social, and spiritual activities took place around the Church, which made for a very secure, fun but challenging upbringing.

Every priest I ever encountered during my time at St. Mary's was great; holy men who really loved us and had our best interests at heart. The other teachers I had at St. Mary's were equally top-notch. Steve Bahrij, in particular, was and continues to be for me, a model of a true Christian charity, selflessly serving as he had at St. Mary's. Some of my best memories revolve around the musicals we used to perform. I loved working with Barb Birmingham, Ruth McCarville and Nancy Grady. They knew how to get the best out of each one of us.

What I remember (and value) most about St. Mary's, however, is how the school instilled in me my faith. I left St. Mary's knowing my faith, and what was expected of me as a Catholic Christian. I seriously doubt I would be a priest today were it not for the formation I received during my years at St. Mary's. I am very grateful that my parents were able to provide me with the education I received at St. Mary's. It is the single most precious gift I have ever received. I hope in my life I will be able to give as a gift what I have received at St. Mary's.
