St. Mary's Academy

Class of 1928-1941

This class started school on September 3, 1928. The teacher was Sister M. Assencia. The

principal was Mother M. Justine. This was considered the Primary grade, and it is now known as kindergarten.

The fall of 1937 was our first year in High School. Our home room teacher was Sister M. Serafia.

In 1939 an addition was made to the O'Neill High School that included a state of the art gymnasium. The O'Neill High School and St. Mary's shared the gym for their respective home basketball games. St. Mary's dedicated the gym, on Monday, December 9, 1939, with a victory over Fairfax, South Dakota.

St. Mary's launched a new project in the fall of 1940, in that they organized a six-man football team. The team was coached by Jack Arbuthnot. Sixteen students were on the squad.

On May 8, 1941 the senior class graduates were guests of the Junior class, at the traditional Junior-Senior Banquet. The gym was appropriately decorated in our national colors, and the theme of the evening was "I am an American". The Rev. Fr. Ostdiek, school superintendent of the Omaha Diocese was a special guest at the banquet.
