To us who look at is sentimentally, Old St. Mary's stands gaunt and grim. It's chimneys are naked sticking out in the Nebraska blue sky. It looks so hurt, so wounded and pitiful as if it is saying: "Look what they did to me after all these years!"
Don't get me wrong.
I wanted St. Mary's torn down. It had finishing its work and it was ready to go. But I wanted it demolished professionally, even lovingly with dignity and affection at the hands of wreckers who knew what it was they were tearing down, not as it went Tuesday night. That night will live long in the memories of old timers who call St. Mary's "Alma Mater".
I hope that soon the wreckers will finish the work of demolition and clear away the rubble, but until they do, we are a sad and dejected community. At every turn looking through those gaping windows and empty rooms and seeing the lost grandeur that was St. Mary's.
God love you all. Pray for us.
SISTER M. CONSTANCE
