Three firemen suffered injuries while battling
the ugly conflagration that destroyed St. Mary's Academy. Injured
were Joseph Grutsch, who was overcome by smoke; Max Farrier, O'Neill,
who received a burned eye, and Eddie Walters, Chambers, who inhaled
exhaust fumes on the ire truck to which he was assigned.
Grutsch was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital where he was confined for several days.
Walters, who was pump operator on one of the fire-fighting units, was taken to the hospital and released the following morning.
