St. Mary’s School Board Minutes

June 28, 2006

 

Guests:  Paula Atkeson, Father Paul Hoesing

 

Janet Fletcher called the meeting to order, and Father Nigli began with an opening prayer.  Board Members present included Janet Fletcher, Lawrence Reiman, Merri Schneider, John Boyle, Gene Soukup, Luann Shields, Hugh Shoemaker, and Dian Edwards along with Norm Hale, Father Nigli and Alice Marx.  Board members absent were Mel Ohri and Sharon Spencer.

 

Guests were recognized and invited to speak.   Father Paul Hoesing introduced himself and expressed that he is looking forward to the coming school year.

 

John Boyle made a motion to approve the agenda, with noted additions, 2nd by Luann Shields.  Vote: All in favor, none opposed.

 

Gene Soukup made a motion to approve the minutes of the May 10, 2006 meeting, 2nd by John Boyle.  Vote:  All in favor, none opposed.

 

Pastor’s Report: 

·       The Archdiocese visit will be scheduled for late fall, 2006.

·       Received a letter regarding training, for the “Foundation of Faith Program” titled:  Morality.  This will be held at St. Mary’s as a teacher in-service on August 18 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

·       Shared information on the Pearson School Computer Program.  This password protected program gives students all of the information regarding their grades.  Parents/Teachers/Students can access the information.  Checking into the possibility of obtaining this program.

·       Would like this summer and upcoming school year to be grassroots recruitment for the school.  Asking all members of the board to talk to as many people as possible about attending St. Mary’s  Schools.

·       Requesting a meeting for Wednesday, July 12 at 5:30 p.m., to review the proposed changes to the handbooks, and policy.  Would like final approval of the handouts, etc. at that time.

·       Mass times this coming school year will be held as follows:  All school masses will be once per month (mostly on Holy Days).  High School mass will be held once per week and Grade School mass will be held twice per week.

 

Principal’s Report:

·       Mr. Norm Hale introduced himself and summarized the North Central Association requirements letter. 

 


 

 

Committee Reports:

A.  Policy Committee:  Will review the policies with Mr. Hale at July 12 meeting.

B.  Safety Committee:  John Boyle reported that they have information on lock-out/tag-out, they are working with Clint Morrill on this matter.  Most of the annual requirements are covered, but they still need to put together an Emergency Evacuation Plan.  Mr. Hale has s suggestion from one he had created in a prior school.  Will bring to the next meeting.

C.  School Finance and Development Committee:  Will set up Parish Clean-up Day for Saturday, September 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

 

Old Business:

A.              Teacher Contracts – All of the contracts are in and signed except for final details on Neah Galloway.

B.              TANN – Dian Edwards has received word that NECC will have the ability to broadcast classes from O’Neill and would plan to offer college credit to high school students.  Next year (2007-2008) will be able to connect with everyone due to moving the distance learning equipment from O’Neill Public School to the NECC Campus.  Will follow up regarding student surveys to see how they need to proceed with promotion of TANN courses.

C.              Smart Boards – Home & School has purchased two Smart Boards for the 5th & 6th grade classrooms for the upcoming school year.

D.              Computer Lab – All of the wiring has been completed inside the classroom, but still needs to be brought from the power pole into the building.  Marlin Seevers will be coming July 17 & 18 to set up the computers.  The software has been ordered, as well as the Smart Boards.  Tim Schneider will put on the countertops before Marlin comes.  With about two evenings of work the room will be completed.

E.               Work Day – Scheduled for September 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., for parish clean-up.    

 

New Business:

A.              Blueprints for possible renovation – Father Nigli presented the blueprints for possible renovation/addition to St. Patrick’s Church and St. Mary’s High School. He will address this subject with the entire congregation at an upcoming mass, and will schedule Town Hall meetings for the early part of August, for parishioners to discuss this possible project.

B.              Enrollment   Both schools have increases in enrollment with 127 elementary school students (up from last year’s 120), and 87 high school students (up from last year’s 82).

C.              Drill Team Camp June 29 and 30 – Drill Team will be going to a camp in Ainsworth, and will be sponsored each day by a parent, because Mel Peetz will not be able to attend.

D.              Letter from Candy Conradt – Reviewed letter from Mrs. Conradt regarding requirements for the upcoming school year.  All concerns shall be addressed.
