GOOD
SHEPHERD SUNDAY DESIGNATED as WORLD DAY of PRAYER for VOCATIONS
Pope Paul VI in 1963
designated Good Shepherd Sunday, which is the fourth Sunday of Easter, as a WORLD
DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS. The
Catholic Church honors all Christian vocations. “Vocation” can simply be
translated as one’s “call from God to a particular way of life.” To say one has a vocation to marriage or
priesthood predisposes that the individual has actively, deliberately and meditatively sought God’s voice to
lead and guide one’s decision. It also means that one is actively engaged in
the life of the Church, faithfully attending weekend masses, praying daily and
celebrating the Sacrament of
Reconciliation frequently. Why?
Without this faithful and active practice of the faith one would be ill
equipped to hear, to recognize and have the grace to act upon the voice of
God. Both, the vocation to marriage
and the vocation to priesthood or religious life, are beautiful, blessed by God
and prepared by God for a life of happiness and fulfillment for every human
