“Behold the Lamb of God”

St. John the Baptist (John 1:29)

Last week we celebrated the BAPTISM of OUR LORD, and it seems that the Church would like to have us  linger with that solemn occasion.  Instead of moving to         another episode of Our Lord’s life in the Gospels, we are  hearing of the baptism again, this time from John the          Baptizer’s perspective.  He offers us a whole new insight into God’s way of coming to us.

Last week the Trinitarian themes of God’s Fatherhood, Jesus’ Sonship, and the Holy Spirit descending like a dove, give us a certain confirmation our Blessed Lord’s divine    identity and mission.  The Father’s grand and thundering voice affirms our sense of God’s awesome arrival:  This is my beloved Son with whom I am well pleased.”  One would    imagine that John would have an equally magnificent title for the Son of God and Savior of Man.  Instead, we are struck with the title:  Behold the Lamb of God.

The Son of God is also the “Lamb of God”?  Why is John  content with this announcement?  Why do we still  recall this title at every Mass?  Why are we told at that moment of the Mass:  “Happy are those who are called to His supper.”  Let us consider why we should be full of joy at  John the     Baptist’s announcement.
