OCTOBER

Month of the Holy Rosary

It is vitally important for parents and grandparents to hand down the spiritual treasures of the Catholic faith to the next generation. The power and the graces offered through the intercessory prayer of our Blessed Mother, on our behalf, through the Most Holy Rosary have had an incredible impact on the spiritual lives of saints and sinners alike. Our children and youth need to be taught to pray the rosary and discover for themselves the manifold graces God offers to them in this simple and profound prayer.

WHAT IS THE ROSARY?

The rosary is a meditative prayer that encapsulates the mysteries  of  the  Life  of  Christ in a very simple and easy to      understand  manner.   Before modern times,  education was only affordable   and   accessible  to  the   rich,   books were handwritten and extremely difficult to come by and illiteracy was the common man’s lot.  The rosary, paintings and stained glass windows were primarily used by the Church to teach and evangelize the faith to the simple folk. The rosary itself was popularized and promoted by St. Dominic (1170-1221) who is said to have received this gift from our Blessed Mother to fight against heresy and false teachings.

The monks from ancient times prayed the hundred & fifty Psalms, alternating verses and responses from one choir on the left of the church to the choir on the right of the church.  Unable to pray the written psalms, the poor folk ...

[COTINUED FROM COVER PAGE]     were led to pray by means of the chant of the rosary.  They meditated on the mysteries and prayed in choir.  The words of the “Hail (Mary) full of grace, the Lord is with you” is from Gabriel’s greeting in Luke 1:26; “Blessed are you … of your womb” is Elizabeth’s greeting to Mary  in Luke 1:42.  “Holy Mary” addresses the person we speak to and “pray for us” is our plea to Mary to take our prayer and petition to God “as sinners”, which is no different from    asking our neighbor or family member to pray for us, except that Mary is already in heaven and her sinless nature and relationship with the Trinity has greater merit.  Let us pray and teach our      children to have the awesome gift and merits of the rosary. Below is the construction of the rosary:

On a Personal Note:   Allow  me  to  take  this  opportunity,  on behalf of my mother

Bernice, my family and I, to thank all of you for your many prayers, phone calls, visits, cards and outpouring of support during my time of grief, over the loss of my father, Oscar Nigli.  He had a very peaceful death.  He received reconciliation, anointing and Eucharist the morning of his passing and had no suffering or pain.  He passed away during his afternoon nap. He was 85 years old and married 61 years. It was one of the most difficult and graced filled times of my priesthood.  Thanks again for your prayerful support.  God Bless You.
