27th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Respect Life Sunday

My dear People of God,

The first weekend of October is designated as a 'Pro-Life Weekend'. Catholic Churches and communities all across the U.S.A. celebrate the awesome gift of life with thanksgiving to God. You would not be reading this note right now, nor would I be able to write one, if your mother or mine had chosen to have us killed in the womb!

The sanctity and the refuge of the mother's womb has been desecrated and violated beyond compare. More human beings have been killed in the womb since abortion has been legalized than all the murder victims and war casualties of the 20th -21st century put together. It's estimated that 4,400 lives are lost to abortion each day, and this does not include the chemical abortion that occurs in taking oral contraceptives, such as "the pill". This does not include the lives that are lost to embryonic stem cell research.

As Catholic- Christian believers, we stand alongside our Holy Father Pope John Paul II and Blessed Mother Teresa to bear witness to these atrocities and to champion the rights of every helpless child in the womb to live! At every mass we will offer prayerfully the souls of those lost to abortion by a presentation of roses at the altar. Fr. Olsen will lead a Holy Hour at St. Patrick's Church at 12:30 pm on Sunday, October 3rd and we will partake with all the Churches in our area in the 'Life Chain' along Douglas Street on October 10th from 2- 3 pm. I thank you f or your active participation in these prayerful testimonies of God's Holy Gift of Life.

With great joy, I welcome our Altar Servers who begin their extended service to the Lord and our community at our weekday Masses from this first week of October. Parents, I thank you for encouraging and supporting our children in this holy ministry. Their service not only provides us with blessings, but they too are blessed beyond measure by the Lord himself at whose altar they serve. Daily mass schedules that were mailed to you will provide you with dates for service, and the attached listing of other servers will enable you to find substitutes if an occasional conflict surfaces. Many thanks to all of you.

Lastly, I make an earnest plea to all parish groups and organizations to schedule all meetings and activities around the 7:00 - 8:15 pm time slot used by our parish children and youth in the Religious Education Program (CCD) on Wednesday. This would enable Fr. Olsen and I to be available to the Sacramental and educational needs of the CCD ministry and also be available to attend other parish meetings and/or activities. Once again, I am truly grateful for all the enthusiasm and giftedness each of you offer for the spiritual growth of our parish.

In His love,

Fr. Francis Nigli
