Saint Elizabeth -
(13th century Hungary) A woman of royal descent, she was noted for
her charity and simple lifestyle. Her husband opposed her acts of
charity. According to legend, he was hunting and confronted her in
the forest as she was taking bread, wrapped in her cloak, to the
poor. He demanded that she show him what she was concealing, but when
she opened her cloak, only roses tumbled out. In the foreground is a
greyhound, often a symbol of Christ, who pursues the souls of
mankind.
