Pastors of St. Patrick’s Parish
1877 - 2002

Father John T. Smith - 1877-1886

Father John T. Smith was the first pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, (originally called St. Josph). He was born in Ireland in 1850 and was ordained a priest on June 24, 1877. He came as a missionary to America and was assigned to the Omaha Diocese. He laid the foundation for the parish and built the first rectory and a larger church that would seat four hundred.

Msgr. Michael F. Cassidy - 1886-1933

Monsignor Michael Francis Cassidy, of County Cavan, Ireland, became pastor of St. Patrick’s, O’Neill, in July, 1886. Under his direction, the beautiful church, the rectory and St. Mary’s Academy were built. He served St. Patrick’s parish for 47 years.

Msgr. John McNamara - 1934-1949

Monsignor John G. McNamara, a native Nebraskan, became pastor of St. Patrick’s in March, 1934. He served through the years of depression and World War II. First as “Father Mac”, and then as Monsignor, he devoted the remaining years of his life to the parish and school.

Msgr. Timothy O’Sullivan - 1949-1966

Monsignor Timothy O’Sullivan, born and educated in County Kerry, Ireland, continued the long history of commitment to the parish and school. During his tenure, the school became the parish responsibility and, in 1965, the old Academy was destroyed by fire. With foresight and dedication, he undertook the building of a new high school, convent, and grade school.
